However, you may not need to even come on to going into Manhattan that often. Since Long Island is really a world onto itself with a wide variety of employment, housing and entertainment opportunities. Moving to Long Island is especially good for those with families since there’s a lot more living space there than in Manhattan.

In general, Long Island is vibrant, full of life, and scenic with a largely diverse culture. That’s why moving to Long Island is actually a great choice for anyone.

We, at Reputable Moving, reliable Long Island movers, will provide you with this clear, yet concise guide to what benefits you can find when moving to Long Island… Ready? Here goes…

Employment:

Let’s start with that since without a stable job… well than how can you afford living in Long Island?

Generally, moving to Long Island gives you some great job opportunities. With unemployment rates relatively low to attest to that one. Firstly, there are many job opportunities within “The Island,” as many locals refer to the area. Many industries are home to this greater New York island.

The aviation industry, for one, has long played a key part in the Long Island economy. Long Island also has tremendous opportunities in science research and engineering, making it an ideal area for those working in research and development. The agricultural industry is also very rich in Long Island, with many farms on the east end of the island who are major providers of locally grown fruits, berries, vegetables, poultry and dairy products. News and media can also offer some great opportunities with several news papers and radio stations based out of the island. Additionally, with thousands of tourists visiting Long Island each year; tourism, especially focused around beach activities, is a fantastic job sector for Long Islanders.

These are just some of the job opportunities that may lie in Long Island itself. However, if you don’t find ideal employment on the island, you can always travel a couple of minutes over to Manhattan where there are endless employment opportunities in pretty much every industry.

So employment and jobs are basically at your finger tips in Long Island, making moving to Long Island ideal for both families and young adults.

Education:

Moving to Long Island is ideal for families because of it’s spacious living. Therefore, education is an extremely important factor to consider before moving to Long Island. Long Island has some of the best public schools in the country. It’s public school system is the largest in New York State, other than New York City’s, of course. And, if you’re a parent who prefers private schooling for your children, there are plenty of private schools to choose from, as well.

There is also a wide variety of higher education options to choose from. There are several secular colleges and universities who dwell among the Long Islanders. In addition, the state University of New York has a few campuses on Long Island. Long Island also maintains several private higher education universities.

So whatever education options you’re looking for, there are plenty of options for those moving to Long Island.

Housing:

In general, housing real estate in Long Island is prohibitively expensive. Recently, though, the market did reach a period of flatness which created greater availability. This can work to the buyers’ advantage. There is also a bit of a range in pricing, with Nassau County being a bit more expensive than Suffolk County. On a whole, though, you’re getting a lot of value for your money. You’ll live in New York City, right near Manhattan, however, you’ll get to enjoy living in a spacious, private home. And all this, at a much cheaper price than any Manhattan home.

If you’re planning on renting a home, however, realize that you’ll be paying a big price for a small space. Rent is extremely expensive in Long Island, even for studio or 1 bedroom apartments.

Transportation:

Although there are plenty of public transit options available in Long Island for daily commuters or for when you’re in a pinch, we highly recommend that you have your own set of wheels to get around on. Owning your own car will make you truly mobile and not completely reliant on public transit. And with a private home and driveway, there’s nothing easier than parking your car in Long Island – hey, there go some brownie points for Long Island over Manhattan parking 🙂

With all that said, public transportation is readily available for daily commutes. Actually, Long Island’s transportation system is one of the busiest in the United States. More specifically, their rail system is the second busiest in the whole country. Long Island’s trains are owned and run by the MTA. Many Long Island residents travel to Manhattan and back by their railroad system called the Long Island Railroad or the LIRR. Additionally, there are buses available which residents use to connect to the train system. Also, there are ferries available that take people to Brooklyn, Connecticut and Queens.

In terms of flights, JFK International Airport is relatively close to Long Island. LaGuardia Airport is also in close proximity to Long Island. MacArthur Airport is another one that’s actually on the island itself. So there are plenty of options for flying out of Long Island… Start dreaming 🙂

Another great transportation option is Uber and Lyft which are good for anyone who wants to travel by car but doesn’t want to drive. With time, these options are becoming more readily available on the Island. There are also plenty of car services and taxis available to hail throughout the island.

Entertainment:

There is so much entertainment available in Long Island that if you’re moving to Long Island, plan on having some fun… I mean, with that much entertainment to be had?! Who wouldn’t?!

Long Island is famous for its beachfront sports and fun as well as its various amusement parks. There’s plenty of boating, swimming, fishing and tanning on the beach to experience. You can also play golf, go horse back riding or get really adventurous and go hiking. If you’re not the outdoor adventure type, there’s also plenty of historic homes and antiques that might pique your interests more. With many wineries, you can take a tour of one of those. Or if none of that’s your speed, there’s also a lot of art galleries and museums available too.
