What to Look for in a Moving Company

Ok, so you’ve decided to move, settled on a new home, worked out the particulars and now… Now you’re looking for a moving company. That sounds pretty simple – no?! Any old guy with a truck and a few employees can move your stuff, I mean, what’s the big deal, right? You could really do it yourself, except you don’t have a truck, right? Very wrong! Moving, especially moving in the right way, takes skill. It’s really not just about having a truck. Moving is a tremendous stress, and having movers who will take at least some of that stress out of your move, if not, all of it, is the key here. How do you choose a moving company? What do you look for when looking for a moving company to transport all of your personal possessions? Well, that’s exactly what we are here to tell you…

Personal References

I know it’s tempting to look the information up on Google, and Google is often your best friend, he’s mine too… bringing the best the internet has to offer in a neat list for you to browse. But when it comes to choosing a moving company, let your friends and family guide you. There’s nothing that can compare to a personal reference. Think of a few acquaintances and/or family members who have moved before. Call them up and ask them how their experiences with their moving company was. Did they arrive to moving day on time? Were they careful with their belongings? Did they run on a timely schedule throughout the day? Were they easy to work with? Did they damage any parts of their old or new home?

Once you’ve asked your questions and got good information, jot down the name and number of the moving company that they used. Call as many people who you know who have moved and compile a list of at least 3 moving companies that were highly recommended.

What do Others Have to Say?

Now that you have a list of recommended moving companies, it’s time to compare them and decide which ones you’re gana go with. Now that you have exact names, go onto Google and search each moving company name. Look at each one’s reviews. What did others who used them have to say? Was your friend’s experience with them a fluke or are their feelings about them consistent with what others have to say about them? Make sure that at least most of their reviews are positive ones. Compare and contrast the different moving company reviews and ratings that you’re looking at. Finally, come to a conclusion of which one of the moving companies on your reference list had the best reviews and therefore takes first place on your list.

Check Location

Before you go with the top of your list as your choice moving company, you’ll have to make sure that some of the simple, practical, yet game-changing particulars are gana work for you. One of the most important points to ponder is the moving company location. Make sure that they work in both the area you’re moving from and the area you’ll be moving to. Do this by either giving them a call or checking their website online. ‘Cause at the end of the day, it’s gata work.

Make Sure It’s Gana Work for Your Move

Not all moves were created equal. Each move is a different size, consists of different items, has different delicate pieces etc. You may have a very fragile antique you need moved. Or, you may have a grand piano you want moved without getting damaged. You might be moving a studio apartment, or is it a 6 bedroom home… Whatever the particulars are, make sure the moving company you’re looking at is equipped accordingly. Be sure that they have the right size truck for your move. Check that they have the necessary supplies and equipment you’ll need for any special items you’re gana be moving. Make sure that they have the skills and experience needed to do what you need them to. Meaning, if you need them to move a grand piano, make sure that they know how to and that they have done so in the past. You wouldn’t want to be their trial and error.

Experience is Key

Another important thing to keep in mind and check before choosing your moving company, is how long they’ve been in business. Having done a few moves is nice, but when you’re looking to move everything you own, you want to choose someone with more experience to lean back on. You definitely don’t want to be their learning experience, that’s for sure. Moving is stressful enough, you want someone who will remove your stress, not add to it. And a moving company with experience, will have what it takes to do just that.

Licensing and Insurance

With all your personal belongings being maneuvered out of your old home and brought into your new home, there’s a lot of room for any number of things to go wrong. We don’t anticipate anything to go wrong, but just in case… Make sure that the moving company you’re choosing is licensed and insured to move people, particularly in the state or states you’re in. Never, ever use a moving company that is not licensed and insured; there is nothing binding them to protect your belongings.

Rates

When you call your moving company, make sure that they give flat rates for their moves. It’s very common among moving companies to give a low initial price and then add a whole slew of extra charges after the move is done. Make sure with them before hand that their price is all inclusive and not subjective to any additional charges.

Now, once you’ve gone through this check list, you’re ready to sign up with the best moving company for your move. Just like not all moves are created equal, not all movers were created equal. So take the time out to make sure that you don’t fall in with any inexperienced, novices, claiming to be a professional moving company, as your movers. Take the time and do proper research to choose the right moving company for your move.
